What is the Uniting Amendment?
The Uniting Amendment is the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution written by ordinary people. Using the collaborative tools of the Internet, people are writing their own future and shoring up the foundation for rebuilding our country. Over 225 years ago, when the Constitution was drafted, most people never attended secondary school and it took days for information to travel across the country. Today people are more educated and informed and with the Internet -- the general population is learning more about issues and topics that had previously been closely held to a privileged few.
But can ordinary people draft a constitutional amendment? Shouldn't it be done by... "them"; the politicians who are smarter than everyone else?
Our current crop of representatives have the lowest approval rating in history, and it's well-deserved. A combination of gerrymandered districts, tightly held media, low citizen participation rates, and a general erosion of values has produced the most corrupt, insular, and incompetent menagerie that Washington has ever seen. These are not the folks we want pouring the new foundation for our 21th Century Reconstruction.
The overwhelming majority of people are more than capable of understanding and developing the concepts needed to draft an amendment that can reestablish a government that is more fair, more free, and has the integrity and compassion needed to carry us forward. With input from just a few hundred people, we've already developed many fresh, innovative ideas to solve long-entrenched, difficult problems. Like:
Prospective immigrants who wish to become citizens are elected by the people. Poverty is eliminated with a single, simply fund that provides basic assistance for all in need at less cost than our current entitlement programs. A strengthened 2nd Amendment while providing a simple system to keep guns from those who are violent or negligent with firearms. A simple tax system with an extremely low rate and no exemptions, but which provides more revenue. A check on the Supreme Court to prevent the establishment of a runaway oligopoly. A set of responsibilities and duties for all people, in addition to their rights. Plus anti-corruption measures, strengthened privacy safeguards, expanded anti-discrimination protections, term limits, a balanced budget, limits on Congressional power, and much more.
All this while increasing our liberty and ensuring fairness in society. And the document is far from complete.
